Empr. à l'angl. cockpit désignant à l'origine une arène de combats de coqs, composé de cock « coq » et pit « fosse, emplacement, parterre ». Dans le domaine de la marine, le terme a désigné une partie du faux pont réservée aux jeunes officiers où l'on soignait les blessés pendant les combats (1706 ds NED) et plus tard la partie creuse (en forme de fosse) d'une embarcation où l'on s'assied (attesté seulement dep. 1887, ibid.), l'extension au domaine de l'aviation est attestée dès 1915 (ibid.), l'habitacle des avions étant à l'origine à ciel ouvert comme dans les embarcations légères.
